The Local DA and Criminal Justice Reform
As a nation we lock up more people than many totalitarian countries. One reason is our drug laws, another is the privatization of the prison system (prisons are a source of profit) and lastly there is the very fundamental discrimination against black and brown citizens in the justice system. Obama and Holder in the previous administration tired to do something on the national level. Shaun King in The Appeal thinks it can be approached on the local level. Among other things he observes that the United States “has more than 2,400 elected prosecutors” and “over 95 percent are white” and of further “83 percent are men.” Elections for prosecutors tend to gain little attention from the voters. In Nelson our current Commonwealth's Attorney is a Republican and will be up for re-election in 2020.
