Nelson County SchooIs and Education
I am so very proud of one of our greatest assets, Nelson County Schools. I have continually advocated for investments in our schools as a vehicle for economic development.
Our schools employ more community members than any other business or industry in the county. Investment in schoolteachers, support staff, and administration serves our children and our families, and builds a strong and educated community and a skilled workforce. Because the percentage of school funding from the federal and state government continues to decline, the county is left to fund an increasing majority of the school budget. Our schools are called upon to provide an increasing range of services, including mental health, behavioral support, special education and learning strategies for children and families whose first language is not English.
I provide regular reports to the Board of Supervisors on important highlights from regular meetings of the Nelson County School Board to improve communication between the two boards. I have tirelessly advocated for fully funding our schools in our yearly budget negotiations and continue to advocate a long-term economic strategy to continue to employ talented and creative teachers and to provide the highest quality educational experiences in all our county schools.
