Connie Brennan Elected Chair of the Nelson County Democratic Committee

LOVINGSTON, Va. – The Nelson County Democratic Committee has elected Connie Brennan, a longtime local civic and political leader, as its chair for 2024-25. She succeeds Larry Stopper, who chaired the committee for six years.

These are confounding times,” Ms. Brennan said. “Our Democratic Party work is community work: Finding approaches to challenges that are inclusive and that attain our common overarching goal — a better life for everyone." 

During its meeting Jan. 22, the committee also elected Becky Evans as vice chair, Marina Kelley as treasurer, and Angela Jones as secretary.

Ms. Brennan has a distinguished history of civic and political involvement in Nelson County. She first ran for public office in 1997, winning election to the county school board. She served on the board for four years, including one year as chair.

In 2000, Ms. Brennan was elected to the Nelson County Board of Supervisors from the newly created Central District, becoming the first woman elected to serve on the county board. She served four terms on the board, for a total of 16 years.

Ms. Brennan moved to Nelson County in 1974. She joined the county Rescue Squad and was a founding member of the Nelson County Historical Society. She also helped found the Women’s Health Center in Charlottesville, a grassroots, non-profit clinic that later transitioned into Planned Parenthood.

A member of the board of the Nelson County Community Development Foundation since 2019, she is also on the boards of the Nelson Heritage Center, the Village of Lovingston Farm Market, and Friends of Nelson,

She graduated from the University of Virginia in 1965 with a degree in nursing and worked as an ER nurse while also owning and managing the Courthouse bookstore in Charlottesville with her husband. She later worked as a nurse-practitioner at UVA for 28 years.

Ms. Brennan lives in Faber. She has three adult children, all of whom live and work in Nelson County.
